Workplaces serve as centers to support business transactions, often with cues from traditional corporate styling but little else. For its new office in Tokyo, the staff at KOKUYO<\/a><\/strong>, a leading manufacturer of office furniture, stationery, and supplies, envisioned a combination work and learning hub that sparks child-like imagination.<\/p>\n

\"Modern<\/a><\/p>\n

The 5,317-square-foot space, completed by DDAA<\/a><\/strong> in collaboration with KOKUYO’s own design team, centers on the theme of learning. It is a spot where employees complete designated tasks and also share their knowledge with others. Yet rather than simply referencing standard education typology, the team looked at family restaurants for inspiration.<\/p>\n

Chain restaurants are popular in Japan, where customers can focus on their own activities even while they are surrounded by fellow patrons. The designers set out to capture this same energy and bring it to the new office, dubbed KOKUYO DIG<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The two levels of the headquarters echo those of a typical eatery. A shared area is on the upper floor, while the lower portion is divided into private spaces for groups. The height of the fixtures, and sightlines, gradually rise seamlessly from the center of the office to the back. Plants double as partitions to offer privacy. Furniture and flooring in green tones complement the flora and add a natural vibrancy.<\/p>\n

In the main zone, tables and chairs of different sizes suit a range of tasks. Users can finish heads-down tasks or have informal meetings on comfortable box-style sofa seats. Large tables with lower heights allow several groups to work together, with plenty of room for documents and accessories.<\/p>\n

Seamless movement and visibility is prioritized, with destinations spread across each floor. There\u2019s a library on the first level, while the second floor boasts a snack bar and supply dock. Paths radiate out from each key location, with furnishings arranged around them to maximize usable floorspace.<\/p>\n
